Mount Holyoke Our First Attempt at Portraiture

"An artist graduate of Mount Holyoke College aided us in the design for the plates of this famous old New England college for women. Lovers of this college will find the mountain laurel, so prevalent about the campus, as the simple motif of the design. Centred at the top appears the college seal, and the centre views are of scenes which are characteristic of this quiet, dignified college in western Massachusetts.

A particularly interesting centre view is the portrait of Mary Lyon, founder of the college. This was our first attempt at portraiture and, to the delight of all, was eminently successful. By the use of portraits of founders and famous graduates, college plates may be endowed with personality."
