Michigan Designated a Specific "First Edition"

"Twelve centre designs chiefly depict "entrances" to the University of Michigan. The old graduate finds magic in these pictures of entrance gates and doorways, which take him back in imagination to his own college days. The border design of these splendid Michigan plates is the work of Professor Titcomb and is dominated by the university seal. The plates are thrice divided by medallions of Michigan fruits, the basis of the border being the Michigan grape-both the fruit and the vine. We employed a conventional secondary border to relieve the circle and to aid in securing a softness for the plate as a whole. The University of Michigan was the first to designate a specific first edition by numbering and by the use of the autograph [in facsimile] of the president of the university."

From "Commemorative Plates by Wedgwood", a pamphlet published in 1931 by Jones, McDuffee & Stratton, the major US china importer of the time, based in Boston.
